Santa Paula, CA – Abrisa Technologies now provides “Dynamic” Deadfront Interface Panel Glass solutions that afford equipment designers greater flexibility in achieving the overall clean lines and sleek uncluttered aesthetics they seek. When backlit, the “Dynamic” Deadfront panel illuminates and draws attention to icons and alpha-numeric indicators as required. When non-backlit, the icons remain hidden and the panel retains a more monochromatic and streamlined look, in perfect keeping with the dashboard or device they are installed into.

The deadfront graphics can be applied to the glass substrate with transmission levels of 5%, 10% or 15% as specified with black ink as the standard color. White ink is optional with PMS color matched inks also available. The minimum feature size for the backlit panel features such as icons and alpha-numeric characters is 0.005” in line width. Deadfront panel glass can be specified in sizes as small as 0.3” x 0.3” and as large as 18” x 24”. The glass thickness for the deadfront panels can be as thin as 0.03” with a maximum thickness up to 1”.

 

Deadfront panels can be fabricated from Abrisa Technologies’ large selection of float, low expansion Borofloat® 33 or highly durability High Ion-Exchange (HIE) aliminosilicate flat glass. The selected glass can then be chemically strengthened or heat tempered in-house. Additional fabrication services include; cutting, shaping, hole drilling, slotting, beveling, grooving, and custom CNC machining.

Santa Paula, CA – An emerging trend in hotel, restaurant, and retail displays is the use of aesthetically pleasing high performance Semi-Transparent Mirrors to create a visually dynamic display/mirror combination. The display unit is located behind the mirror, hidden from view until powered on when the image appears clear, sharp and color neutral. Santa Paula, CA – August 2, 2013Abrisa Technologies provides front surface mirrors or first surface mirrors for a broad scope of optics applications. These mirrors have a long product life, superior durability, and can be cleaned easily.

 

Front surface mirrors have over-coated dielectric layers that are vacuum deposited on the surface of a clear glass substrate to increase reflectivity and protect against humidity and abrasion. The sharper image created by a front surface mirror lacks the ghosting effect of a conventional mirror.

 

The substrate of choice for a front service mirror is float glass with a typical flatness and irregularity of 4 to 6 waves per inch. Typical thicknesses that are available from stock are 1mm, 1.6mm, 2.3mm, 3mm, 5mm, 6mm, and 10mm. Front surface mirror sizes are available in dimensions up to 74” x 130” or 1880 mm x 3320 mm in 3mm and 6mm thicknesses.

Soda-lime glass can be chemically strengthened to increase mechanical strength or heat strengthened/tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength. The substrates can be machined, optically coated, chemically etched, sandblasted, colored, or laminated.

 

Soda-Lime sheet glass is made by a floating molten glass on a bed of molten tin; this method gives the sheet uniform thickness and very flat surfaces. Soda-lime is the base material for most clear, colored, and patterned glass types. Soda-Lime glass can be used in a wide range of applications.

 

Abrisa Technologies can supply the following soda-lime glass substrate material:

Abrisa Technologies Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) and Index-Matched (ITO) Optical Coatings are Electrically Conductive and Optically Transparent

Santa Paula, CA – Abrisa Technologies can provide both Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) and Index-Matched Indium Tin Oxide (IMITO) thin film optical coatings for a wide variety of optics applications. The durable coatings provide for an electrically conductive glass surface that offers high optical transparency with transmittance levels that can be in excess of 99%. Common wavelengths for the coatings are 400 to 700 nm (visible) and 1500 to 1650 nm (near IR). A variety of sheet resistances such as 5 ohms per square for shielding applications and higher values for heater applications can be provided depending upon the particular application requirement. Glare reducing broadband anti-reflective coatings can also be applied to the glass substrate along with the ITO/IMITO coating.

 

ITO/IMITO coatings are commonly used to shield electromagnetic interference (EMI) while transmitting a high level of visible light, as heater windows for outdoor use, and in electronic devices such as LCDs and switches. The coatings can be applied to a wide variety of commercial glass such as soda lime float glass, borosilicate and aluminosilicate glass as well as other technical substrates such as ceramic, and fused silica.

 

Typical applications for ITO/IMITO coated glass include:

  • Liquid crystal, flat panel, plasma, and touch panel displays
  • Heated and anti-static windows
  • Transparent EMF, EMI EMC, RFI, and HF shielded glass

ITO and IMITO coatings from Abrisa Technologies are resistant to flaking, peeling, cracking, delaminating, and crazing. The coatings can be applied to substrate sizes as small as 0.25″ and up to a substrate size as large as 27″ in diameter. The minimum substrate thickness that Abrisa Technologies can provide ITO coatings for is 7 µm while the maximum substrate thickness that can be coated is up to 4″.

 

Custom fabrication of ITO/IMITO coated glass can include the addition of Bus Bars, custom edge treatments, opposed drilling of holes, custom cutting, chemical strengthening, screen printing, wire bonding, and more, for a fully integrated optics solution.

 

All ITO/IMITO coatings are applied via an ion assisted physical deposition process which provides an extremely uniform film while virtually eliminating macro particle content.

In fact, Abrisa Technologies can supply the rugged, chemically strengthened HIE™ glass in thicknesses of 0.5 mm up to 2.0 mm for the following applications:

  • Liquid crystal, flat panel, plasma, and touch panel displays

  • Part-to-part consistency (registration, print thickness and resolution)
  • Edge printing to within ±0.010″ tolerance
  • Step printing to create offset layered print
  • Extremely good line definition, tight tolerance up to ±0.005″
  • Depending upon artwork, feature-to-feature registration is exact to print; or within a tolerance up to ±0.004″
  • Opacity of print is dictated by color and print thickness in addition to ink type (epoxy or frit). Typically, black would have an optical density between 2.5 to 3.5 or greater

All screen printing is performed at Abrisa Technologies on either a semi-automatic or automated printer in a class 1,000 or 10,000 cleanroom. The platform selected is dependent upon the particular specification requirement. Inks are available in multiple colors, including metallics and range from low temperature epoxies to high temperature frits.

 

Large format screen printing is available on substrate sizes as large as 72″ x 54″ (1828 mm x 1371 mm) while the minimum size for screen printing is 0.3″ x 0.3″ (7.6mm 7.6 mm).

 

Low Temperature Epoxy Polyester Ink:

  • Resolution – can print as fine as 0.127 mm (0.005″)
  • Thickness – single pass (10 µm to 12 µm) & double pass (25 µm to 60 µm)

High Temperature Frit Ink – more durable and scratch resistant:

  • Resolution – can print as fine as 0.3 mm (0.012″)
  • Thickness – <0.051 mm (0.002") – single pass (35 µm to 60 µm)

The ion-exchange process creates a deep compression layer on the surface of the glass structure, resulting in a highly scratch, shock and impact resistant end product.

 

This thin, strong, and flexible glass is extremely durable and damage resistant making it ideal for use in electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, PCs, displays, touch screens, TVs, and a host of other electronic device applications.

 

The HIE™ ultra-tough, high performance thin glass allows for very sleek touch screen and display devices with improved brightness and touch sensitivity.

This process typically increases the strength of the glass by 6 to 8X that of float glass. The ion-exchange process creates a deep compression layer on the surface of the glass structure, reducing the introduction of flaws once incorporated into the end product and put into service.

 

Typically used for electronic display screens such as smartphones, laptop and tablet computers, mobile devices, touchscreens, and more, HIE™ glass provides outstanding resistance to breakage, scratches and temperature fluctuations.

Due to its impressively high compression stress (CS) of, more than 900 MPa, it offers a significantly higher bending strength and higher ball drop strength test resistance than comparable materials currently available on the market. Furthermore, SCHOTT Xensation™ Cover glass has delivered stable values under low temperatures during the chemical curing process with respect to compressive stress on the surface and depth of ion exchange.

Borofloat® has a low specific weight in comparison to soda-lime glass, and is consequently well-suited for applications where weight limitations are a consideration. The glasses low thermal expansion and its high thermal shock resistance as well as its ability to withstand temperatures up to 450°C for long periods of time make Borofloat® ideal for applications where temperature stability is a must.

 

As far as optical properties, Borofloat® is a clear, transparent, colorless glass, with excellent transparency both in the ultraviolet and also in the visible and near infrared range of light. Its extra low inherent fluorescence or light emission, combined with very good surface quality, flatness, and homogeneity allow it to be utilized for a wide-range of applications for optics, opto-electronics, photonics, and analytical equipment.

 

Due to its low alkali content, Borofloat® acts as a high-power insulator, and is therefore a suitable material for applications where good non-conductive properties at temperatures up to 450°C are called for.

Typical patterned glass held in stock includes:

  • Crystal 73® (Prismatic) – Maximum size is 48” x 102” or (1219.2 x 2590.8 mm) with a thickness of 5/32” or (4 mm). This glass has a pebble effect for blending, spreading and diffusing transmitted light. It is a low-iron optically clear glass offering maximum transmission and minimal absorption. It does not yellow over time like plastic, retaining its optical clarity. It widens beam spread approximately 55 degrees. It can be heat tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength and can be coated with a UV blocking coating or a dichroic color coating.
  • Solite® (Softening) – Maximum size is 48” x 102” or (1219.2 x 2590.8 mm) and is available in thicknesses of 1/8” (3.175 mm), 5/32” (4 mm), and 3/16” (5 mm). The stipple effect provides obscurity while retaining high transmission values. This is a low iron optically clear glass offering maximum transmission and minimal absorption. It does not yellow over time like plastic, retaining its optical clarity. It can be heat tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength and can be coated with a UV blocking coating or a dichroic color coating.
  • Industrex® (Diffusion) – Maximum size is 60” x 132” or (1524 mm x 3353.8 mm) with a thickness of 5/32” (4 mm) and 3/16” (5 mm). This glass provides obscurity and privacy while retaining a high level of light transmission. It is a low iron optically clear glass offering maximum transmission and minimal absorption. It does not yellow over time like plastic, retaining its optical clarity. It can be heat tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength and can be coated with a UV blocking coating or a dichroic color coating.
  • Pattern 62™ (Obscures) – Maximum size is 60” x 132” (1524 mm x 3353.8 mm) with a thickness of 1/8” (3.175 mm), 5/32” (4 mm), and 3/16” (5 mm). This glass is a diffuser and can be used to project an obscure or uneven pattern. It is also used in backlit applications to diffuse light. It can be heat tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength and can be coated with a UV blocking coating or a dichroic color coating.
  • Skytex (Linear) – Maximum size is 85” x 65” (2159 x 1651) with a thickness of 5/32” or (4 mm). This linear diffusion glass is ribbed and can be used to spread light horizontally or vertically. It is an ideal solution for diffusing and elongating a beam of light to structures such as columns. It features a 1/8” (3.175 mm) wide linear fluted pattern on one surface and has a 55 degree spread either horizontally or vertically. It can be heat tempered to increase thermal shock resistance and mechanical strength and can be coated with a UV blocking coating or a dichroic color coating.
  • Frosted Glass (Sandblasted) – is used to soften a beam. This glass is available in regular soda-lime, or low iron soda-lime and sandblasted in any shape, size or thickness. Borofloat® frosted diffusion lenses are available from stock in MR11 1.370” and MR16 1.965”. Maximum size is 60” x 132” (1524 mm x 3353.8 mm) with a standard thickness of 3.3mm. It can be coated with a UV blocking coating or a dichroic color coatings, can be heat strengthened, and made available with custom patterns or shapes sandblasted onto the glass.
  • Hexagon Louver – is commonly used in conjunction with a standard diffusion, colored, and dichroic products to reduce glass brightness from a variety of light sources. It is made from low density, high strength material originally used for structural use in the aircraft industry. Maximum size is 12” x 12” (304.8 x 304.8) with a thickness of 1/8” (3mm). It is available in aluminum color or black and can withstand temperatures of up to 350°F.
  • White Flashed Opal – is a colorless base soda-lime glass which is fused to a thin white flashed layer. Using White Flashed Opal, one can create an ambiance in diffused lighting similar to daylight with very little shadow. It has an average transmission of approximately 35%, can be heat strengthened or tempered, is scratch resistant, non-deforming, and non-combustible. It is available in sizes up to 32.5” x 27.875” (825.5 x 708 mm) and in thicknesses of 3mm and 6mm.

This process does not affect the optical quality of the glass, making it an ideal solution for display panel and touch screen applications. The chemical strengthening process can make the glass up to 8 times stronger than annealed float glass.

 

This strengthening process is done via an ion-exchange surface treatment, and works well for strengthening soda-lime or other thin glass material with a high sodium oxide content and a thickness of less than 3 mm.
