Fused Silica vs. Quartz

Fused Silica and Quartz are both extremely pure materials featuring very low thermal expansion and excellent optical qualities. They both work well as high temperature view ports, optical windows, and in areas that require good chemical resistance.

 

The main difference between the two is that Fused Silica is composed of a non-crystalline silica glass, while Quartz is made from crystalline silica. This difference gives Fused Silica very high transmission in the UV spectrum compared to that of Quartz. Quartz also features a much lower OH content.

 

The Abrisa Industrial Glass (AIG) division offers two options:

 

Corning® 7980 Fused Silica – Corning® 7980 is a very pure, non-crystalline silica glass. It features very low thermal expansion and excellent optical qualities, including very high transmission in the UV spectrum.

GE 124 Fused Quartz – GE 124 is a very pure fused quartz, made from crystalline silica. GE 124 is very similar to fused silica, with the exception of less transmission in the UV spectrum and much lower OH content. Other features besides its purity include excellent thermal properties and high resistance to chemicals.

Abrisa Technologies provides integrated optical solutions including precision glass fabrication and high efficiency optical coatings for the display and imaging, optoelectronics, lighting and entertainment, aerospace and defense, and general industrial markets.

 

Mr. Miller “Bob” comes to Abrisa Technologies with very distinguished credentials, including extensive supply chain management, manufacturing, and materials management expertise in the high-tech manufacturing arena. His career includes operational management positions with CVI Melles Griot, Advanced Bionics, Coherent, Inc., Portable Energy Products, Siemens Corp. and Harris Microwave to name but a few. With a B.S. Degree in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, Bob possesses the perfect hands on experience and educational mix to upgrade and enhance the operational capabilities of the company.

 

According to Blake Fennell, President and CEO at Abrisa Technologies, “Bob has the unique ability to identify root cause problems and put systems in place to deal with those problems quickly and efficiently. Large Format Screen Printed Optics
Now Available from Abrisa Technologies


Santa Paula, CA – Abrisa Technologies has recently upgraded their Santa Paula facility with new equipment which enables screen printing of glass substrates in sizes up to 56” x 86” or 1,422.4 mm x 2,184.4 mm. with a tolerance of up to ±0.030” or ±0.76 mm depending on part size and image. Minimum substrate thickness is approx. 0.039” or 1 mm with maximum substrate thickness of 0.75” or 19 mm.

 

Screen printing is available in multiple standard and custom colors, including metallics, opaques, and semitransparent inks, and range from low temperature epoxies to high temperature frits. Minimum print resolution can be as fine as 0.005” or 0.127 mm for printing logos, icons, lettering, borders, and more.

 

The large format screen printing is ideal for large touch panels and display screens, outdoor displays, and digital signage applications. In addition to large format screen printing, Abrisa Technologies can also screen print glass substrates in sizes as small as 3” x 2” or 76.2 mm x 50.8 mm, with a tolerance of ±0.006” or ±0.15 mm. Minimum thickness for the smaller screen printing of 16” x 16” or 460 mm x 460 mm is 0.030” or 0.76 mm and maximum substrate thickness is 0.5” or 12.7 mm.

 

Abrisa Technologies’ screen printed optics can be combined with additional processes such as chemical strengthening, custom glass fabrication (cutting, edging, drilling, etc.) and the application of optical thin film coatings (AR, UV, ITO, IMITO, hydrophobic, and oleophobic) to provide a integrated package solution for display enhancement or other high quality, high precision optics application.

 

Abrisa Technologies Anti-Glare Glass Minimizes Reflection
for Improved Optical Quality


February 25, 2011 – Santa Paula, CA – Abrisa Technologies anti-glare, soda-lime glass breaks up incidental light reflected images, so that focus can be placed upon the display image instead of the reflected image. Unlike anti-reflective (AR) coated or untreated surfaces, anti-glare glass does not become highly reflective as a result of oily finger prints.

  • Superior durability
  • Anti-Newton ring

Abrisa Technologies’ anti-glare glass is manufactured by a controlled acid-etch process yielding uniform diffused surfaces. Various levels of diffusion can be specified depending upon the application requirement. A lower gloss reading requires a more diffused panel. The more diffusion, the more anti-reflective properties it will provide. Anti-glare glass can be laminated as well as heat tempered or chemically strengthened. Standard sizes, thicknesses, and gloss levels are carried in stock. Standards include a 70° gloss one side only, in sizes up to 32 x 40 x 3/32” and two sides at a gloss of 70° a sizes up to 24 x 24 x 1/8”. Custom requirements can be specified with gloss ranges from 50° to 120°.

 

Typical applications include: display monitor face plates, electronic displays, medical instruments, video game screens, touch panels, and LED displays.

February 25, 2011 – Santa Paula, CA – Abrisa Technologies is an industry leader in Bus Bar and display printing. Typical applications include printing gauges and instrumentation, display and touch panels, icons, borders, logos, lettering, and more.

 

The screen printing department at Abrisa Technologies has recently been upgraded and now has the capability to large screen printed optics up to 56” x 86”. In addition, the class 1000 clean room at Abrisa Technologies has an Ekra X4 fully automated printing system up and running which allows Abrisa Technologies to meet a very high print-to-packaging cleanliness and efficiency standard. The system prints with an accuracy of ±15µm @ 4 sigma; ensuring the highest level of precision printing in formats up to 460 x 460 mm.

 

Print projects can utilize a combination of conductive or display inks, along with custom color matching to meet each unique application requirement. Abrisa Technologies uses epoxy, thermoset, enamel, and ceramic-based inks. In addition, opaque and semitransparent inks can be specified.

Selection of Dichroic Color Filters


February 24, 2011 – Santa Paula, CA – Abrisa Technologies Dichroic color filter coatings are an excellent alternative to dyed plastics and glass. Unlike plastic color gels that age and breakdown relatively quickly during use, dichroic filters from Abrisa Technologies are designed to stand up to the heat and UV energy in high energy light sources.

 

Dichroic filters have the advantage of reflecting unwanted light instead of absorbing the energy, allowing dichroic filters to be used with much higher intensity light sources. Used in a variety of applications, Abrisa Technologies’ dichroic filters can be found in architectural lighting, entertainment lighting, and in science and engineering applications.

 

Abrisa Technologies has over 160 different colors of dichroics in stock. The long lasting filters can be used in temperatures up to 900°F, and come standard at 1.75mm (.069) thick unless noted on Borofloat®. In addition to dichroic colors, Abrisa Technologies offers a host of dichroic color correction filters as well as solid colored glass which can be heat treated up to 6” in diameter for added resistance, at 1/8” thick.

Patterning of ITO and IMITO
for heated or EMI shielded display glass

ZC&R Coatings for Optics And Abrisa Industrial Glass partnered up in February of 2008 to produce a better glass ITO solution. The initial information regarding this is available at Photonics Online.

 

Many companies are finding that they have tighter project budgets as technology improves and newer innovative devices reduce the costs of operation, which is why our fully automated printing system used in this process is so important. The printing system allows for a lower project cost while offering a 15 µm print to print accuracy and maintaining a print area of up to 460mm x 460mm. The use of this printing system adds the repeatability that many ITO applications require at a lower cost. The printing process is performed in a class 100 clean room so that the coating integrity is maintained.

 

This process developed for glass ito is capable of supporting multiple solutions for coating needs. One solution that benefits greatly from this new process is Etch ITO and IMITO. The low cost of the process allows for greater flexibility in design and patterned coatings. The efficiency of this process also reduces cost, which is especially notable in etch of index matching layers in EMI shielding applications, and in etch of ITO in heater applications which is more cost effective than the standard 2-step deposition processes.

 

This process also features patterning of epoxy based electrical contacts. Standard linear bus bars are effectively applied through this process as well as custom shaped bus bars. Ink based frames and other OEM art work also benefit from this process. Thermoset or ceramic-based inks can be applied efficiently at a low cost.
